Dr. James E. Rushton Named to Lead
Nuclear Science & Technology Division

Dr. James E. Rushton has been named to lead ORNL's Nuclear Science and Technology Division effective immediately. Dr. Rushton brings more than 30 years of experience in advanced nuclear technology, line and program management, and strategic planning to the position. As division director, he will lead one of ORNL’s largest and most complex organizations with internationally recognized programs and capabilities across a broad spectrum of nuclear science and technology.

Jim joined the Engineering Technology Division at ORNL in 1974 upon completing a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering at the University of Wisconsin. During his Oak Ridge career, he has held increasingly responsible positions at ORNL and the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant including director of the Advanced Isotope Separation Division, director of Enrichment Business Services, director of Regulatory Affairs for Martin Marietta Utility Services, Inc., project manager for the Molten Salt Reactor remediation, ORNL U-233 program manager, and acting director of the Nuclear Science and Technology Division. These positions have included management of some of the most challenging projects in the Oak Ridge complex, including the development of advanced enrichment technologies, corporate-level strategic planning for the enrichment business, defueling the Molten Salt Reactor, and the Operational Readiness Review for the national U-233 repository. Jim was named ORNL Project Manager of the Year in 1998 for his leadership of the Molten Salt Reactor remediation.
