Commercial refrigeration in general, and supermarket refrigeration in particular, uses a large fraction of national energy consumption in the U.S.
Large compressor racks provide hundreds of horsepower of cooling capacity to maintain fresh and frozen foods at safe temperatures throughout the food chain.
DOE funded work on large uneven parallel compressor racks that demonstrated significant cost savings for electricity to the end user and
energy savings to the U.S. economy and resulted in a redefining of standard practice in supermarket refrigeration systems.
