Advanced Appliance Research: Advanced Insulation, Refrigerators & Freezers, Water Heaters, Low Back Pressure Compressors, and Other Appliances

In the 1970's, the Department of Energy (DOE) initiated a project to accelerate the development of advanced appliances for residential and commercial buildings. This work included:

• advanced insulation including evacuated panels and foam insulations that incorporated ozone-safe blowing agents,
• high efficiency refrigerators and freezers,
• natural gas-fired and electric commercial and residental water heaters,
• low back pressure compressors for refrigerators and vending machines, and
• other advanced appliances.
