David Allison is a Research Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology, at The University of Tennessee. He received his B.S. degree in zoology from Michigan State University in 1963, his M.S. in microbiology from the University of Tennessee in 1970 and his Ph.D from the university of Tennessee in 2007. He retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1999 as a senior research scientist from Life Sciences Division after a 33 year career. Since 1987 his research has been directed toward the development and application of probe microscopy for solving biological problems. He has pioneered sample preparation techniques for imaging biomolecules with probe microscopes including DNA mapping by AFM. His current research interests include applications of AFM for research at the nanoscale. Away from the laboratory one of his many hobbies would include preparation of the regional cuisine of the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
