Field
of Specialization:
Isotope and Analytical Chemistry and Geochemistry
Research
Interests:
Development,
improvement and application of high precision isotope ratio techniques
(sector SIMS, TIMS and ICP-MS), particularly for small sample analysis.
Understanding
and controlling the causes of mass bias and other instrumental artifacts
in these techniques.
Use
of isotope ratios (stable and radiogenic) and trace elements to
quantify mass transfer processes operating at nano- to global- scales,
and applying these techniques to various systems, including geologic,
environmental, material, and biologic.
Application
of SIMS and TIMS to nuclear safeguards and counterterrorism.
Clean
chemical extraction/purification processes in preparation for mass
spectrometry.
Fluid-rock
interaction processes in diagenetic, hydrothermal, and ore-forming
environments, and in particular, using the microscale chemical/isotopic
record to study these processes.
Using
isotope disequilibrium as a “kinetic clock” to study the duration
of natural fluid-rock interaction events.
Experimental
determination of isotope fractionation factors and rates of isotope
exchange.
Understanding
the mechanisms and factors controlling the rate of glass (obsidian)
hydration, and applying this knowledge to develop new tools to age
date artifacts from archaeological sites.
Extrapolating
this knowledge to better constrain long-term behavior of waste glass
forms.
