Dr. Griest is a native of Vienna, Virginia. He earned a BS with honors in chemistry at Virginia Tech in 1968, and a PhD in physical chemistry at Vanderbilt University in 1975, with service in the US Army in 1969-1970. He has been at ORNL for 28 years and is a in the Chemical Sciences Division (A.K.A. Analytical Chemistry Division and the Chemical and Analytical Sciences Division). He has been
the Manager for the Block II Chemical Biological Mass Spectrometer
Program since its initiation in 1997 and is the Facility Manager
of the ORNL Chem-Bio Facility. Dr. Griest's research interests
include the chemistry and analysis of chemical and biological
warfare agents and explosives, environmental organic analytical
chemistry, identification of biologically active constituents
in complex matrices, analytical extractions, and high resolution
gas and supercritical fluid chromatography. He is the author or
co-author of more than 150 papers and reports and has made more
than 60 presentations.
