The Flow Assay Sensing and Testing system (FAST), developed under contract to the
Naval Research Laboratory, is a rapid, portable system for performing flow immunoassays
with detection limits to 1 part-per-billion. Assays for a number of different types of analytes,
including TNT, RDX, drugs of abuse, and insecticides have been developed or are currently
under active development. In operation, this small-molecule assay system uses a
fluorophore-labeled analyte bound to analyte-specific antibody that is immobilized on a
permeable membrane. When a sample, containing analyte, passes through the membrane, an
exchange reaction occurs displacing labeled analyte that is measured down stream. A typical
assay requires two minutes to run and up to fifty assays can typically be performed before
the disposable membrane coupon has to be recharged.
