Welcome to the
Chemical and Isotopic
Mass Spectrometry Group

The Chemical & Isotopic Mass Spectrometry Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory specializes in the development and application of sensitive, accurate and precise mass spectrometric techniques in a diverse array of fields, including

Geochemistry
Fundamental Chemistry
Materials Sciences
Medical Sciences

World-class mass spectrometry capabilities exist for elemental and isotopic characterization, in inorganic, organic, and biological matrices. Our group specializes in method development and ultra-trace detection techniques using GD-MS, SIMS, TIMS, ICP-MS and laser ablation MS.

Major research focus areas include developing separation and analytical techniques for ultra-trace analysis applied to

applying ion trap mass spectrometry to understand gas- and solution-phase chemistries of heavy metal ion (primarily lanthanides and actinides) interactions with polyatomic substrates rates

application of mass spectrometric techniques to the investigation of quantum size-effects in nanometer scale metallic and nonmetallic cluster compounds with well-defined size and structure (primarily catalytic systems)

application of in-situ isotopic analysis to subsurface mass transport studies, bioremediation, and safeguards, and utilizing ion micrographs for soft tissue analysis
