Awards - 2004

2004 R&D 100 Award

Highly Selective, Regenerable Perchlorate Treatment System Baohua Gu (ESD), Gilbert Brown (CSD), Bruce Moyer (CSD) Peter Bonnesen (CSD), and Spiro D. Alexandratos, Developers.

Perchlorate, the primary ingredient of solid rocket propellant, disrupts function of the human thyroid gland. This system uses a unique, highly specific resin that traps the perchlorate, destroys it, and then regenerates itself so it can be reused, breaking the perchlorate down into harmless chloride and water.

Delmau named to Technology Review's Top 100

Lætitia Delmau was named as one of the world's top young innovators by Technology Review magazine . Lætitia joins the "TR100" group of 100 selected by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's science publication. She was recognized for helping to solve fundamental problems in nuclear-waste treatment that led to an economical process for cleaning up more than 100,000 cubic meters of radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, which manages the U.S. nuclear stockpile.

Delmau awarded Early Career Award

Laetitia Delmau was awarded UT-Battelle’s Early Career Award for scientific accomplishment at their annual Awards Night ceremony in October 2004. She was recognized for her exceptional research, initiative, leadership, and outstanding contributions to chemical separations science and technology.

2004 Geochemical Society of Japan Award

Jusuke Horita received the 2004 Geochemical Society of Japan Award at their annual meeting in September 2004 in recognition of "his outstanding contributions in the area of experimental studies of stable isotope partitioning at elevated temperatures and pressures." The award honors major achievements in geochemistry or cosmochemistry consisting of outstanding publications that have had great influence on the field.
