Research Interests:

Dr. Lance is a former Wigner fellow and research staff member of the Structural Ceramics Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division at ORNL. He is in charge of the vibrational spectroscopy facilities for the Metals and Ceramics Division at ORNL. His main research interest is in using vibrational and fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize SCR catalysts and diesel particulate filters.

Selected current research themes include:

  • Next generation NOx catalysts
  • Microstructural characterization of SCR catalyst systems
  • Soot characterization of diesel particulate filters
  • Soot fouling of EGR heat exchangers
  • Fracture behavior of structural ceramics, i.e. SiC, cordierite, Al2O3
