Research Interests:
Jae-Soon Choi is a Research and Development Staff of the Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research (FEER) Group in the Energy and Transportation Science Division at ORNL. He performs extensive research relevant to real-world automotive emission control and clean fuel production. Jae-Soon’s research is focused on elucidating the nature and distribution of active sites and the mechanisms and kinetics of various catalytic systems by integrating information obtained from catalyst preparation, characterization and performance evaluation.
Selected current research themes include:
- Characterization of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) soot oxidation – reactor evaluation to determine kinetics of different types of soot collected under a wide range of engine conditions
- Characterization of Lean NOx Traps (LNTs) - reactor evaluation and physicochemical analyses to understand NOx and SOx loading profiles and regeneration chemistry
- Evaluation of mille-second contact-time fuel reformers - intra-catalyst determination of gas composition and temperature to elucidate reforming mechanisms
- Spatially and temporally resolved performance evaluation of monolithic catalysts and reactor systems
- Development of advanced reactor diagnostics – spatially resolved capillary inlet mass spectrometer (SpaciMS), fiber-optic-based phosphor thermometry
