Dr. Moyer¹s background entails 27 years of experience in fundamental and applied chemistry of recognition and transport of cations and anions, particularly involving solvent extraction and ion exchange (SX&IX).  His efforts have focused on radionuclide separation for environmental and waste cleanup in the USDOE complex, and his accomplishments in fundamental research on SX&IX are internationally recognized.  Dr. Moyer leads the Chemical Separations Group of ORNL's Chemical Sciences Division and is Co-editor-in-Chief of the journal Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange.  He has 8 patents and approximately 150 career publications.  He is a co-inventor of the Caustic-Side Solvent Extraction (CSSX) process scheduled for deployment in the $1B Salt Waste Processing Facility at the Savannah River Site for cesium removal from alkaline high-level waste and held leadership roles in the development and demonstration of this technology.  In the area of ion-exchange, Dr. Moyer was also a co-inventor and contributor to the successful development of BiQuat anion-exchange resin, now commercialized for pertechnetate and perchlorate removal from groundwater.  He is also an inventor of the SRTALK process for removal of technetium from alkaline tank waste by solvent extraction using a crown ether.

 

Biographical summary:  Dr. Moyer graduated summa cum laude from Duke Univ. in 1974 with a B.S. degree in chemistry with honors and from the Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1979 with a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry.  Memberships in honorary societies include Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma, and Phi Lambda Upsilon.  He has been a research chemist at ORNL since 1979, holding the positions of Group Leader, Chemical Separations Group, since 1987, and Group Leader, Transuranium Research Laboratory, 1990­1991.  He has been a member of the American Chemical Society since 1979, serving in the elected positions of Secretary-Treasurer (1992,1993) and Vice Chair-Elect through Past Chair (1994­1997) of the Separation Science and Technology Subdivision of the I&EC Division.  He joined the Editorial Board of the journal Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange in 1988, moved to Assoc. Editor (1993­2002) and to Co-Editor-in-Chief in 2002.  He has been serving on the Editorial Board of the journal Hydrometallurgy since 1994 and is Technical Program Chair for the 2008 International Solvent Extraction Conference.  He served on the Advisory Committee of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (1995­1999).  Dr. Moyer has received a number of awards: IR-100 Award in 2004 for a highly selective, regenerable perchlorate treatment system; five ORNL Chemical Sciences Division Technical Awards, 1996­2001; three Lockheed Martin Research Corporation Achievement awards‹Leadership Award, Development Award (novel bifunctional anion exchange resin), and Development Award (novel process for cesium separation from waste); UT-Battelle Technical Achievement Award in 2000 for contributions to the development of novel resin regeneration techniques.  He has given  numerous invited lectures:  Visiting Scientist, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, 1999; tutorial, environmental aspects of inorganic chemistry, 1999 Fall ACS National Meeting; university departmental seminars; 2001 Gordon Conference on inorganic chemistry; plenary address, 2001 ACS Fall National Meeting; plenary address, 2001 EMSP High-Level Waste Workshop; keynote lecture, 2002 International Solvent Extraction Conference; and symposium honoring Daryle Busch, Fall 2004 ACS National Meeting.
