User Research Facilities

Cooling, Heating, and Power (CHP) Integration Laboratory (pdf)

A new $2.5-million facility for research, development, and deployment of packaged, integrated CHP systems for buildings.

Building Envelope Test Facilities

  • Large-scale climate simulator: controlled temperature, pressure, and humidity for large test sections
  • Rotatable climate simulator: thermal performance of full-size wall, fenestration, roof, and floor systems at angles from 0 to 180 degrees
  • Roof thermal research apparatus: effects of long-term exposure of small, low-slope roof test sections to the East Tennessee climate
  • Envelope systems research apparatus: energy and moisture flow through envelope test sections (walls and sloped and low-sloped roofs)

Heating and Cooling Equipment Test Facilities

Include adjoining environmental chambers, compressor calorimeters, multipurpose vapor compression test loops, an air-to-refrigerant heat exchanger test loop, absorption heat and mass transfer rigs, and a corrosion test laboratory.
