Advanced Refrigeration

BTC work on advanced refrigeration systems focuses on

• dramatically improving the energy efficiency of existing residential and commercial heat pump and refrigerating equipment;

• applying advances in refrigeration research to nontraditional applications such as water heating and integrated appliances;

• providing industry with data on new refrigerants to replace chlorinated refrigerants in buildings applications; and

• working with industry to establish a knowledge base of safety, performance, and operational characteristics of new refrigerant/lubricant mixtures.

A number of research efforts are ongoing in this program:

• Warming impacts of alternatives to HCFCs

• The DOE/ORNL Heat Pump Design Model (HPDM)

• New heat pump working fluids

• Assessment of nontraditional refrigeration cycles

• Improvements in commercial refrigeration
