Visit/Assignment Access

Access to the Bioprocessing Research Facility is determined on the basis of scientific merit, technical feasibility, and compatibility of the proposed research with the facility equipment and operational priorities. Approved users will receive guest appointments for the duration of on-site work. Cost recovery will be required without a DOE sponsor.

When outside personnel request visits or job assignments within ORNL user facilities, the facilities have strict rules they must follow to allow outside personnel access. There are no exceptions to these rules! Please note that the time it takes to process your application for a visit or assignment depends on your citizenship and can take up to four months for non-citizens.

  1. Visits - You are making a visit when you come for discussions or are attending a workshop or conference. This means you are doing "no work". You may go on tours but you may not work on experiments or analyze data. A visit (or several) may not exceed seven (7) days a calendar year.
  2. Assignments - You are on assignment if you intend to do an experiment or some other "non-discussion" activities. You are also on assignment if your cumulative total of days visiting ORNL exceeds seven (7) days.
  3. Training - ORNL, in most cases, requires a guest/visitor to undergo some form of training. Basic entry into ORNL will entail watching a video about the overall relevent laboratory safety system. If you plan to be on-site for ten (10) consecutive days, General Employee Training (GET) is required. You will also need some laboratory specific training on equipment and procedures.  This takes 0.5 days. Please let the user facility manager know well in advance of your plans.

U.S. Citizens

This is the simplest procedure. If laboratory-wide access is needed the information contained on your driver's license should be faxed or given to us the day before arrival.
