S ite Description Great Smokies Area. Gatlinburg lies in a valley 443 m above sea level at the base of the Great Smokies’ third-highest peak, Mt. LeConte (2020 m), and adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Early May in the mountains is usually very pleasant with mild days and cool nights. The town itself is a resort with interesting shops, some featuring handicrafts native to the Appalachian region. Numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty traverse the Park. Those who enjoy backpacking may want to consider hiking in the backcountry the weekend before or after the symposium.In addition, commercial tours of Gatlinburg and the surrounding area can be arranged independently through hotel guest services. Every room boasts a beautiful view of the Smokies. Reservations for lodging should be made directly with the Park Vista. A special Symposium room rate of $80.00 (excluding taxes) is being offered for the nights of April 27-May 4, 2002. Reservations received after this date will be on a rates-available, space-available basis only. Transportation. Air travel reservations should be made to Knoxville, Tennessee. Transportation from Knoxville’s McGee Tyson Airport to Gatlinburg may be arranged with Executive Limo (800-432-7923). The fee is $50.00 per person, $30 each for 2-4 persons, or $25.00 each for groups of five or more (one way) if the reservation is made in advance of your arrival at the airport. Rental cars are available at the airport.
