Dilute-Acid Hydrolysis of Hemicellulose from Silage Presscake

Production of silage from forage grasses by lactic acid fermentation is a common process for conserving animal feed.  Another possibility for the use of silages is to fractionate them into valuable products like lactic acid, proteins, and fibers.  During this refining process the silage is pressed, in order to obtain a juice which is rich in lactic acid and proteins; whereas the solid residue consists of approximately 30-35% cellulose, 15-25% hemicellulose, and 20% substance which cannot be hydrolyzed in sulfuric acid.  The hemicellulose fraction of this material can be converted into monosaccharides by dilute sulfuric acid at moderate conditions and thus yield a low-priced substrate for fermentations.

 

Since the material has a high puffer capacity, it was necessary to remove the responsible substances in an extraction step prior to hydrolysis. The experiments were carried out in a 20-L batch hydrolysis reactor.  Investigated parameters are reaction temperature, acid concentration, and dry matter substance.  The experiments were conducted using a statistical experiment design.  More than 20% of the dry raw material could be converted into monosaccharides in the best experiments.
