Welcome to the home page of the 24th Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals!  This symposium continues a series that focuses on improving the technology and economics of fuels and chemicals production. This year’s program provided the opportunity for experts from around the world to gather and discuss the latest research breakthroughs and results in biotechnology. A variety of formal technical sessions, a poster session, and informal discussion groups allowed the exchange of new information among attendees from industrial, academic, and government sectors. Participants were also able enhance their experience by taking advantage of the social activities of the Symposium location near Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains.

The symposium has concluded.  This site contains the schedules and viewable abstracts from the symposium, which was held in Gatlinburg, TN on April 28 - May 1, 2002 at the Park Vista Resort Hotel.

We thank you for either attending the Gatlinburg 2002 conference or for just visiting our website. If you have any questions, you may call the conference office at (865) 241-3810, or you may e-mail our office at watlingtonnw@ornl.gov.

The 25th Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals will be held from May 3 to May 7, 2003 in Breckenridge, Colorado.  Please join us there for our silver anniversary!

Session 1

Sunday

1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Session 1.  Feedstock Production, Genetic Modification and Processing. Topics will encompass plant genetic modification and breeding, as well as production issues (farming, silviculture, harvesting, densification, and storage) and some initial processing steps (ensilage and pretreatment).

Session 2 Monday

 8:15 am - 12:00 noon

Session 2.  Microbial Catalysis and Metabolic Engineering. New and improved microorganisms will be needed to produce fuels and chemicals.  Presentations on the genetics, metabolism, biochemistry and development of these biocatalysts are sought.

Special Topics Monday

 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Poster
Session
Monday

 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Poster Session.  This program will showcase the full range of topics for the areas of the formal sessions. Presenters are encouraged to set up their posters early. The poster format is most appropriate for presentations that benefit from detailed descriptions and direct interaction between the author and other participants.
Session 3 Tuesday

 8:15 pm - 12:00 pm

Session 3.  Bioprocessing Research. This session will cover advances in improved development of the reactor where critical conversions into fuels or chemicals occur.  These conversions and studies include fermentors, hydrolysis, modeling, or other novel configurations via the combination of engineering with microbiology, biochemistry, and chemistry.

Session 4 Tuesday

 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Session 4.  Genetics and Genomics in Bioenergy and Bioproducts. A round table discussion on the application of massive gene expression methods and genomics in metabolics and gene discovery, as well as other related topics such as the implications of the use of GMOs in large-scale fermentation processes.

Session 5 Wednesday

 8:15 am - 12:00 noon

Session 5.  Development of Industrial Biobased Products. Speakers will cover recent movement from lab to commercial in the  production of chemicals and other value-added bioproducts from biological rather than petrochemical routes.  This includes process integration, commercialization, demonstration, economics, and lifecycle studies for the "biorefinery."

Session 6 Wednesday

 1:15 pm - 5:00 pm

Session 6.  Enzyme Production and Conversions. Papers will focus on advances in the direct use of enzymes to carry out conversions of biomass into sugars by cellulases as well as direct transformation of chemicals into value-added chemicals by a variety of other enzymes.  Papers will also give advances in cost effective production and genetic improvement of these enzymes.

Session 7 Wednesday

 1:15 pm - 5:00 pm

Session 7.  Downstream Processing of Bioproducts. This session will emphasize either subsequent conversion of the primary biobased product into other value-added products or separation of these chemicals to the desired purity.

Reception &

Banquet

Wednesday

6:00 pm

7:00 pm

Reception and Banquet.  Entertainment from J. R. Irwin and the Museum of Appalachia Band, as well as announcement of the winner of the C. D. Scott Award
