ORNL researcher earns Lockheed Martin award

Dr. J. Michael Ramsey, senior staff scientist and group leader in the Chemical and Analytical Sciences Division of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been named a recipient of the 1996 NOVA Award presented by Lockheed Martin Corp.
Ramsey, winner of a 1996 R&D 100 Award as well as Discover magazine's annual technology award for his work on development of Laboratory-on-a-chip, was selected by Lockheed Martin as an outstanding employee who has made extraordinary contributions to help the company achieve a goal of 100 percent mission success. Standards for selection are high. Ramsey and 49 other recipients received their awards recently during the NOVA Awards Night dinner in Washington, D.C.'s Langley Theater. They were also featured in a July 2 Lockheed Martin advertisement appearing in the national newspaper USAToday.
Ramsey joined ORNL in 1979 as a Eugene Wigner Fellow in the Chemical and Analytical Sciences Division. In 1981, he was named a staff scientist, and became a group leader in 1986. Ramsey was named senior staff scientist and group leader in 1990.
Prior to joining ORNL, Ramsey was an associate instructor and research associate from 1974-79 at Indiana University. He was also a visiting scientist at California's Livermore laboratories during the summers of 1977-78.
Ramsey is a member of the editorial advisory board of the publication Analytical Chemistry. He is a member of the Optical Society of America, American Chemical Society, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, IEEE and Sigma Xi.
He earned a B.S. degree in chemistry in 1974 from Bowling Green University before earning a doctorate in analytical chemistry in 1979 from Indiana University.
A resident of Farragut, Ramsey and his wife, Roswitha, have one son, Christopher Blake.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp.
