Lockheed Martin employees contribute nearly $1.5 million to area United Way agencies

 

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 21, 1997 — Thanks to the generosity of thousands of employees and retirees, the 1997 Lockheed Martin Oak Ridge United Way campaign has exceeded its goal, with contributions totaling more than $1.423 million to agencies in the East Tennessee area.

"We are so grateful to those who helped make our campaign such a success," said Mary Lou Whitten, 1997 General Campaign chair. "It is a remarkable tribute to the people of Lockheed Martin that we could surpass our goal during this time of such uncertainty in all our lives," she said.

Whitten added that company employees have much to be proud of. "Though employment at our sites has decreased by some 14 percent since last year's drive, United Way giving decreased by only 7.7 percent," she said.

The 1997 campaign exceeded its goal of $1.3 million by more than 9.5 percent. The total includes a corporate contribution of $76,000.

Contribution totals for employees at the Oak Ridge sites were as follows: East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP),$229,762; Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL),$583,721; and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, $506,948. Company retirees contributed $26,697.

Here is the funding breakdown for United Way agencies in the East Tennessee counties where most Lockheed Martin employees live: Anderson, $489,722; Blount, $24,713; Campbell, $18,137; Claiborne, $25; Cumberland, $5,938; Hamblen, $1,331; Hamilton, $2,408; Jefferson, $1,439; Knox, $512,662; Loudon, $66,172; McMinn, $4,735; Monroe, $6,345; Morgan, $43,754; Roane, $198,204; Rhea, $2,542; Scott, $10; Sevier, $3,810; Union, $7,249.

Lockheed Martin Energy Systems manages ETTP and the Y-12 Plant for the Department of Energy; ORNL is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
