Nuclear power is having a rough time lately – “fallout” from Fukushima, competition from cheap gas turbines, cost and schedule overruns of some of the new large plants, and concerns about proliferation and spent fuel storage. Our feelings are also hurt when we’re not included in the “green power” camp. HTGRs have a long history of bouncing back after periods of neglect and funding loss. This talk presents a case for the timely rebound of the modular HTGR. Design, operational, and safety features will be reviewed, along with descriptions of HTGR programs in the US and around the world.
