Eugene Wigner Fellowship

The Eugene P. Wigner Fellowship is the most prestigious fellowship at ORNL and honors Eugene P. Wigner, Nobel Laureate (1963) and first Director of Research and Development at ORNL. The Wigner Fellowship is aimed at attracting new scientific talent to ORNL and making it possible for these outstanding new scientists to continue on the path to excellence while substantially contributing to ORNL and U.S. Department of Energy missions and goals. There have been more than 100 Wigner Fellows since it was established in 1975.

The Wigner Fellowship provides the opportunity for recent doctoral degree recipients of exceptional ability to pursue research programs within their areas of interest and expertise, collaborate with Laboratory R&D staff and distinguished scientists, and have access to Laboratory expertise, facilities, and programs. ORNL hires Wigner Fellows as staff associates and aims to retain each Fellow at the Laboratory as a staff member at the end of the three-year Fellowship term if it is mutually desirable for ORNL and the Fellow.

The Wigner Fellowship is open to all fields of science and engineering. Applicants must have received their doctoral degree before his or her start date and can be no more than three years beyond receiving their doctoral degree at the date of application submission. Applicants should not have previously held more than one postdoctoral appointment.

The Wigner Fellowship is posted three times each year on the ORNL Career’s Website

Posting 1: November 1 - January 31

Posting 2: March 1- May 31

Posting 3: July 1- September 30
