Summary: /etc/passwd + getty problems

Dear Managers, 

Thanks to the several quick responses I soon found the source of the 
problem. Actually it was nothing to do with the /etc/passwd
file. Thanks to Michael Bucholtz's suggestion, I looked at some backup 
files saved from the last time I ran 'sys_check' and discovered that
at boot time /usr was being mounted read-only! Which was what was
REALLY happening. Anyway, everything works now.
