Question: two nic's different names in the same machine?

Hi everybody, I have a Compaq ES40 with two Ethernet cards, each of them
configured with different addresses in the same network segment. Who is
installing this machine is saying that each card should be configured
with a different name, is that true? I will install a mail server in
this machine, so I want to know what is the best configuration possible
so the email could arrive and leave using both interfaces, and how can I
configure the machine to use the same name, again, in both interfaces.
