all I needed to do was to 
thor/tom 262 > xhost +localhost
localhost being added to access control list
thor/tom 263 > su

before su.

	Only the logged in user can change the security characteristics
	of the X server.  Fall back to being you instead of root to
	use xhost and you should be ok.
