David,
I run 7/8 HP LJ4M+'s via the telnet ie. port 9100 option (this
allows the banner pages to be removed!), using a non-standard input filter
... it's called hpdriver and can be picked up at
ftp://ftp.cs.umn.edu/dept/users/lemay
Version 0.4 (which is free!) is perfectly satisfactory, I believe
version 1.0 is under development (but it will be shareware) and may be out
by now. Other advantages are relatively simplistic logging for accounting,
an additional log file, and most usefully the LCD/LED display logs a
message at the end of a job indicating the user-id and number of pages
printed.
Mail me if you have any problems with it ... or want a copy of my
setup's!
