Sorry for late summary, I have been away. My original post:

David,
We also have a2ps compiled and use it quite often. We do not have the
problems you describe, but I have seen similar problems in other situations
and discovered either -
1. the printer was a faulty, ie the postscript interpreter was buggy,
or
2. some previous file had loaded something into the "system dictionary"
(I'm no postscript expert), and that the printer had to be reset
in some way (usually power cycling).

Haven't checked this. I hope this isn't the case as the printer is a APPLE
laserwriter NTR, and takes prints from Macs, windowsPCs, as well as the Alpha.

Hello,
This is just a guess, but have you checked to make sure that it is
using the right size paper (A4 vs. US letter?).
Just a shot in the dark...

Yes, this is ok.

Well, I just compiled the sources that I'd been running on my Ultrix systems
and started using it without difficulty. (This is version 3.11-4 of a2ps).

I may try this version

I had the same prob's under Ultrix. Try psify, which you will find with
archie. If you don't or have no access to archie and/or ftp I could mail
you the sources.

I would like to stay with a2ps because it works fine on our Sun machines, but..

Hi,
Try psf, it's available at gatekeeper.dec.com. I'm not sure whether I've
tried a2ps but psf is much better than pps or nenscript. You can supply
options that will allow you to specify top margin, left margin, lines
per page and font size, so this should solve your problem. It also comes
with some neat utilities that will allow you to among other things print
man pages.

Thanks I may try it

David,
I use a2ps ver 4.0, and it works just fine, but I think I stayed with the
default values for margins etc. But if you want to change the defaults, you
have to edit the a2ps.c source file. You will find a #define MARGIN 1.2
there in line 101, which you may alter before you compile.
Good luck!

This is encouraging, but I tried defaults to begin with!
PS Someone asked where I got the source for version 4.0. I got it from a
BHP archive, but I believe its on achie.
