CD-ROM RRD43 complaints
DEC has recently started shipping an RRD43 CD-ROM in place of the
RRD42 unit. True, its a double speed device, but most of my users
use the CD-ROM as a CD player and the audio quality from the RRD43
is terrible!
I'm using the xcd source from the Motif examples shipped with OSF/1 V2.0.
I have two specific complaints that I'm wondering if anyone has addressed
already:
1 - The volume control slider in xcd does not work correctly. Its either
off or on.
2 - The RRD43 headphone output is swamped with digital switching noise,
coming, it seems, from the CD-ROM electronics. This has been
verified to occur with 3 different RRD43 units.
** CAUTION **
Anyone substituting an RRD43 for an RRD42 should exercise caution using
the headphone jack. The power output from the RRD43 appears to be much
greater than that of the old unit and you will lose ears and/or headphones
if you are not careful!
