Re: removing monitor & keyboard
When attaching or removing the mouse/keyboard connector:
MAKE SURE THE SYSTEM IS POWERED DOWN.
The port carries power and can cause damage if the cable is moved rudely.
I know this from experience on the 5000's
To run without kbd/mouse, you'll need a serial terminal attached to the
printer/alternate console serial port (MMJ). Flip the switch back there
to the left.
You'll need to power cycle it for that switch to take effect.
The graphics card may be removed, but this is not necessary.
Firmware changes:
>>> SET SERVER ON ; skips kbd/mouse diags
OS changes:
turn on a getty for /dev/tty00 and /dev/tty01 (I think it will come up
on tty01)
By the way, the book "DEC3000 AXP Model 500/500S Service Information"
EK-FLAMI-SV.B01 talks about a Network Console which sounds way cool
except that it requires DECNET which I don't have installed nor do
I have the time to learn about it. Would some kind soul out there check
it out? The procedure is:
target machine:
set a console password
set MOP, TRIGGER
host machine:
$ mc ncp (VMS)
$ ncp (ultrix)
NCP> show known circuits
NCP> connect via circuit SERVICE PASSWORD xxxx \
PHYSICAL ADDRESS 08-00-2B-XX-XX-XX
>>> ctrl/D disconnects console
NCP> EXIT
