File table full

I've many users on my system and from time to time, I've the following error
message : File table full.

It seems to me that the nfile parameter in param.c was too small (992) and
I've changed it and built a new kernel. The problem is that the command
dbx -k /sys/SYSTEM/vmunix
print nfile

gives always the same number 992.

I've tried also to change MAXUSERS or maxusers but with no effect.

Some ideas on that problem ?
