SUMMARY: dxconsole

There seem to be two different solutions to the problem of starting up dxconsole
iconified.

The first one works through the .Xdefaults file, by either addding
	dxconsole.initialState: 3
or
	dxconsole.initialState: IconicState

The second solution uses the DXConsole file, which can (normally) be found in
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/. Adding the line
	*iconic: True
to this file causes *every* dxconsole that is started on your machine to be
iconified (for every user). Copying the DXConsole file first to your home
directory and then editing it causes only your own dxconsole to start up
iconified.

Dr. Thomas P. Blinn from DEC admitted that there is an inconsistency between the
documentation and the behavior of the software. The manual pages for dxsession
state "The X console is started in icon form by the session manager at login".
Instead, dxsession starts up dxconsole and doesn't bother to iconify it at
login. This bug will be fixed ...

Tom the Mad Hatter <madhatta@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> suggested trying
	dxconsole -iconic
which I knew to work fine indeed, since '-iconic' is a generic Xresource which
all clients are supposed to honour. The initial dxconcole however is started up
by dxsession, and I was looking for a way to tell dxsession to add this
'-iconic' parameter.

<rem@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> is using twm and has the following line in his .twmrc:
	StartIconified { "dxconsole" }

Mike Rhyner <rhyner@xxxxxxxxxxxx> provided a solution to the analogue problem of
starting up dxsession iconified. Although I had already worked out this solution
for dxsession myself, other people might be interested: add
	DXsession.startup_state: iconified
to your .Xdefaults

Finally, some people expressed their interest in the solution to this problem,
thereby implying that I was not the only one wrestling with dxconsole, and thus
saving my self-esteem. Thanks to Alan Hanson
<abhanson@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> and Chester Liu <cht@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>.
