floating point exception crashes

On our Alpha 3000-300 running OSF1.3 we get quite some crashes
because of 'floating point overflows' (probably division by zero) in
our own atmospheric simulation model. The system then completely
reboots, and leaves often huge core dumps (upto 100 MB). We plan to
install the SPHINX image processing package. But the people who
ported it to the Alpha also reported rather frequent 'floating point
overflows', with subsequent crashes.

Is this a known problem ? Can it be solved ? That my program hangs
OK, I got to solve that my self, but what worries me is that the
system reboots.

Any help is appreciated and will be summarised.
