So when is something like that going into netqmail?  I had hoped that
the patch insanity would no longer be necessary once qmail was public
domain.

Granted, I don't think it makes sense to incorporate every patch out
there.  I'm not sure I see the point in having qmail-smtpd support
STARTTLS (whether directly or via signaling tcpserver to switch on
encyption) unless qmail-remote supports it, too.

I don't think everybody is going to agree on what functionality to
add, so, I think a fork or two is inevitable.  I don't think that's
the end of the world.  Horizontal transfer of functionality will occur
where the licenses are compatible.  Those fit to survive will do so.
