clients hang when fetching mail and using mcafee

I've searched the archives, but didn't find anything helpful. 

We are having a problem with people who have fetching mail from a pop
account and also have Mcafee Virusscan. On specific emails (usually
foreign character sets), their mail client hangs and won't download the
message. Shutting off Mcafee completely (have to quit as well as kill
all mc* processes) allows them to download the message, so it seems to
be a problem with the mcafee pop scanner.

Mcafee support has been pretty useless (how many times are they going to
ask me to reinstall the product). Has anyone else experienced this and
know of a workaround? I was thinking it might be a known bug in the pop
scanner, like the netscape messenger one.

This is with an unpatched qmail-pop3d running under tcpserver.
