I think you can use a SMTP-Slicer (tm;)
We use 3 boxes for outgoing/incoming SMTP only. All our internal boxes are
forced to deliver to this 3. When the internal listserver send's all the
messages to the 3 outgoing mailserver's, he does in fact split's the list of N
recipients in N messages to 1 recipient. This traffic is all in a 100MbFullDX
ethernet so it's pretty fast and the outgoing mailserver's are behind a
hardware loadbalancer (Alteon switch... Very, Very good!).
The result: we split a mailing list of 20000 recipient to 20000 messages/1
recipient each, load balenced into 3 (currently) outgoing mail servers.
It work's great. No need to write yet another piece of glue
