Safety must be part of our process
Providing a safe and healthful work environment for our employees is a fundamental principle of the Lockheed Martin Corporation. This obviously applies to all operations of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 Plant. While management must provide appropriate leadership in your respective organizations, the effort to improve safety performance requires your help, your accountability and your responsibility.
The need for safety teamwork was underscored in July with the death of a fellow employee in an accident at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory. Our goal for employee and contractor fatalities must he zero—anything more is absolutely unacceptable. Individually and collectively, we must have zero tolerance for unsafe working conditions. Each of us is responsible for our own safety and for the safety of those around us. We must be involved with self-assessments, understand the risks associated with our work and take personal responsibility to be adequately protected. Together, we want to make sure we all return unharmed to our families following each day’s work.
To this end, we want to work hand in hand with DOE in support of the principles of the Integrated Safety Management Systems (ISMS). Put simply, ISMS is defining the work scope, identifying hazards associated with work, mitigating hazards, planning work well, performing safe and efficient work, and feeding the results of work performance back into the work control process.
That means we are all part of the work safety team. We must have strict adherence to the policy of zero tolerance for accidents that threaten injuries or major environmental contamination. We must also have a work environment that fosters free and open expression of all safety concerns.
We must all think about what we can do to make our work safer and have the fortitude to do it. For each of us, for all of us, we must renew our commitment to safety with action.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Sincerely,
