ORNL's Blue, Qu, Robinson recognized
Craig Blue, Jun Qu and Sharon Robinson have been recognized by national societies for their recent accomplishments in science and engineering. (hi-res image)
Craig Blue, director of ORNL's Energy Materials Program, has been elected fellow of the American Society of Metals International for his contributions to the field of materials science and engineering.
Blue has authored or co-authored more than 80 publications, received 11 patents and three R&D Awards, and was the 2003 UT-Battelle Distinguished Engineer of the Year. He also is heading an effort to develop an Industrial Energy Efficiency Center at ORNL.
Blue earned his doctorate at the University of Cincinnati before coming to ORNL in 1995. He will be recognized at the ASM Awards Dinner in October as part of the Materials Science and Technology Conference and Exhibition in Pittsburgh.
Sharon Robinson, a member of ORNL's Energy Efficiency & Electricity Technology Program, has been elected a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers "for her distinctive professional accomplishments and contributions in chemical engineering."
Robinson, who currently is manager of Waste Management Systems and Technology in ORNL's Nuclear Operations Directorate, also is recipient of the 2009 Robert E. Wilson Award from AIChE for achievements in nuclear engineering. She is the first woman to receive the award and is one of only four recipients who have won the award while at ORNL.
The Robert E. Wilson Award, established in 1967 and the oldest award presented by a division of AIChE, will be presented at the AIChE annual meeting in November in Nashville.
Jun Qu of ORNL's Materials Science and Technology Division is this year's winner of the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. The award honors the accomplishments of outstanding innovators in academia and industry who are age 35 years or younger.
Qu's research interests include advanced manufacturing, surface engineering and tribology. He has published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and holds two patents. Applications of his research achievements include wear-resistant surfaces, thermal drilling, a method of hardening titanium and machining of metals.
Qu received his doctorate from North Carolina State University and master's degrees from Iowa State University and Tianjin University.
UT-Battelle manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the Department of Energy.
