Governor's School for Math, Science concluding for year

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., May 13, 2009 — High school students from across Tennessee enrolled in this academic year's Governor's Academy for Math and Science are concluding their work at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory almost nine months after they started, according to academy director Craig Green of the University of Tennessee.

"This experience at Oak Ridge has helped them not only figure out what a researcher does, but also has drawn them to projects their mentors are doing," says Green.

Green adds the nine months experience in Oak Ridge has paid off well for the students.

"They started in August researching about Oak Ridge National Laboratory," Green says. "They researched what content they would like to research. At Christmas, they were matched up with a mentor and started half a day one day a week doing research projects with their mentors here."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
