Oak Ridge National Laboratory researcher and tournament co-director Brad Weil says many scientists of the future will be participating.
"FIRST LEGO League was initiated in 2000," Weil says. "It seeks to inspire children in the middle school area to seek careers in science and technology."
Weil says participants work around a theme.
"This year the theme is called 'Climate Connection,'" Weil says. "It's about not climate change, but about how different climates effect the way we live - whether it is arid areas of rain forest areas."
UT-Battelle and Tennessee Tech are co-sponsors of the event.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
