OAK RIDGE, Tenn., April 17, 2008 — Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the first East Tennessee organization to earn the Fit Friendly Award from the American Heart Association.

Oak Ridge Wellness Manager Joan Lawson says the laboratory's work force is encouraged to be physically active, including during work hours.

"We have tried to bring in programs to get our employees healthier and, therefore, more productive and to improve their quality of life," Lawson said.

Oak Ridge's participation numbers are impressive.

"The very first program we put on was a walking programs," Lawson said. "I had about 1,500 employees participate in that walking program."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
