OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 12, 2007 — Retired U.S. Army Gen. Carl Stiner of LaFollette told a Veterans Day audience at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory that the United States must persevere and succeed in the war on terrorism for the sake of future generations.

"If for some reason that we as a nation should choose at some point not to make the necessary sacrifice, then our children and grandchildren will pay a much higher price," Stiner said. "The cost will be in terms much greater than money."

Stiner said the past can provide a guide in fighting the war on terrorism.

"As we look back at our history, we have faced some tough challenges before, although not quite like this one," Stiner said. "We've always come through when united as a nation."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
