OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Sep. 13, 2006 — More than 300 college students from across the nation have participated in science internships during the summer at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Program coordinator Linda Holmes says these future scientists worked with researchers and sophisticated equipment of a national laboratory that you won't find in a college or university.

"They work with world renowned scientists," says Holmes. "In the process, they learn about communicating about their science, as well."

Holmes says a goal of the program is to mentor future scientists. Many previous interns have ended up eventually working full-time at Oak Ridge.

"We've had students who get invited back," Holmes says. "Some of them extend their stays here into the fall and beyond. Some get hired here. Some come back next summer. The hope is that many of these students will consider a national laboratory as a future employer."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
