OAK RIDGE, Tenn., May 26, 2006 — A recent $10,000 gift to Farragut High School is one of 30 gifts to East Tennessee schools science programs that UT-Battelle has presented during the past several years.

Lee Riedinger, associate laboratory director for University Partnerships at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, says the gifts have helped these schools upgrade their science facilities.

"This is service we do for the community," says Riedinger. "There are a hundred different stories where labs need to be upgraded or refurbished or expanded."

Riedinger says these gifts are an investment in the future.

"Clearly we are dependent upon that next generation of bright kids going to undergraduate and graduate schools to prepare themselves for a career in science, technology, math and computer science," Riedinger says. "We need that here at the lab. Many companies and universities need that for the next generation workforce."

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
