OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Feb. 27, 2006 — Advancing hydrogen fuel cell technology as an alternative energy source to power automobiles is the goal of researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Oak Ridge fuel cell director Tim Armstrong says engineers are developing a system to distribute hydrogen to future fuel cell filling stations.

"Oak Ridge is working with the Department of Energy in a leadership effort to develop advanced distribution networks for hydrogen to get the hydrogen from the point of production to the end use, working in the area of metallic materials and advanced materials for metallic pipelines and advanced materials for polymer pipelines," Armstrong says. "

Armstrong says Oak Ridge is well positioned to advance hydrogen fuel cell technology.

"Our alloy and corrosion groups are bringing a lot of unique capabilities to design the materials for hydrogen distribution networks," Armstrong says.

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
