OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Aug. 16, 2005 — The Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory will work with three institutions on a variety of mathematical-related research projects thanks to a $1.2 million DOE Office of Science grant.

"We're going to work with the University of Arizona, Iowa State University and the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Morgantown, W. Va.," said Sreekanth Pannala of ORNL's Computer Science and Mathematics Division, "This is going to be a process where students and others are involved with this as part of their training and research mission."

Projects will include computational mathematics, applications of materials and coal technology research, and could lead to additional research opportunities.

"This is a general procedure which we think will help address several issues, and is not limited to the applications we are specifically planning to work on." Pannala said.

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
