Audio Spot: ORNL monitoring energy efficiency systems at two Texas Wal-Marts

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., July 21, 2005 — Monitoring energy efficiency systems in two Wal-Mart stores in the Dallas suburb of McKinney is being conducted over three years by Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Oak Ridge Buildings Technology Center Director Jeff Christian said monitoring is being conducted in an existing Wal-Mart store and a newly opened store with 200 energy efficiency system sensors.

"Wal-Mart has a substantial monthly energy bill - something like $40,000 a month," Christian said. "This store has the possibility of reducing that about 40 percent."

Use of electricity is not the only monitoring that is taking place.

"Over this three-year period, we are going to be monitoring the overall energy savings and water savings," Christian added.

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
