Nazarewicz named scientific director of ORNL's Holifield facility
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., April 27, 2000 — Dr. Witold Nazarewicz, professor of physics at the University of Tennessee, has been named deputy director for science at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The Holifield facility is devoted to low-energy nuclear structure and astrophysical research. Radioactive ions are produced when intense hydrogen or helium beams are accelerated and directed onto thick, refractory targets. The beams are ideal for research in nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure.
Nazarewicz has been a professor at the University of Tennessee since 1995. He was previously a professor of physics at Warsaw University in Poland. His research has centered on the development of theoretical models of the nucleus.
He is the author of more than 225 research papers and 100 conference contributions. He has made more than 105 presentations at meetings.
Nazarewicz earned his doctorate in physics from the Warsaw Institute of Technology. His family resides in Oak Ridge.
