Hunter College honors ORNL pioneer
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., March 23, 1999 — An honorary Doctor of Science degree has been conferred upon Dr. Liane Russell of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) by Hunter College of the City University of New York.
Russell helped found ORNL's Mammalian Genetics and Development Section in 1947 with her husband, Dr. William Russell, after moving from the Jackson Laboratory in Maine.
She has received many national and international honors. In 1994, she won the Fermi Award, one of the nation's most prestigious scientific awards, for her contributions to nuclear energy research. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Hunter College Hall of Fame.
Russell holds a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Hunter and a doctorate in zoology and genetics from the University of Chicago. She and her husband live in Oak Ridge.
ORNL is a DOE multiprogram research facility and is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
