Vo-Dinh Receives First Lockheed Martin Technology Commercialization Award
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., July 6, 1998 — Dr. Tuan Vo-Dinh, corporate fellow in the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Life Sciences Division, is the first recipient of the Lockheed Martin Technology Commercialization Award.
He was honored for his leading role in transferring ORNL technology to the private sector. His research into using light to probe and analyze matter has led to more than 16 inventions that benefit health and the environment.
Vo-Dinh, who has worked at ORNL since 1977, is the leader of the Advanced Monitoring Development Group of the Biochemistry and Biophysics Section. He holds 16 U.S. patents, five of which have been licensed by DOE to private companies for commercial development.
He has written more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and is the author and editor of seven books.
Vo-Dinh has received numerous professional awards, including five R&D 100 awards, the Inventor of the Year Award from the Inventors Clubs of America and the Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer from the Federal Laboratory Consortium.
He and his wife, Kim-Chi, live in Knoxville. They have a daughter, Jade.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
