Environmental, Life Sciences Complex named for Lloyd
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 10, 1997 The Environmental and Life Sciences Complex within the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) was named today in honor of former U.S. Rep. Marilyn Lloyd.
Participating in the ceremony were Martha Krebs, director of DOE's Office of Energy Research; U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, James C. Hall, manager of DOE's Oak Ridge Operations; Alvin Trivelpiece, president of Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation; Herman Postma, former director of ORNL; and Gordon Fee, retired president of Lockheed Martin Energy Systems.
The complex is an 80-acre site including the main Environmental Sciences Building, the Aquatic Ecology Laboratory, the Life Sciences Data Analysis Facility, the Plant Sciences Laboratory, the Hydrology Office Building, the Physiological Ecology Building, support facilities and a portion of the Oak Ridge National Environmental Research Park. These facilities support a unique combination of basic and applied research activities.
Lloyd, a Democrat and resident of Chattanooga, represented Tennessee's 3rd District in Congress for 20 years from 1975 to 1995. Re-elected nine times with majorities at times of almost 70 percent, Lloyd was a champion of science and technology and strong supporter of efforts on behalf of DOE's Oak Ridge Operations. She was a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee. As a member of the House Science Committee, she was chairman of the Energy Subcommittee.
Following her retirement from Congress, she was named to the Secretary of Energy's Advisory Board.
Environmental research is conducted to understand and evaluate how the development and use of energy affect the environment. Research in the life sciences addresses the understanding of complex biological systems. Support for educational activities is a key element of ORNL's environmental and life sciences programs.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
